Dr. Ann McIntosh, retired Childs librarian,
started the Reading Railroad program over 25 years ago. The program
features a book list, updated yearly, with 17 different categories. The
main goal is to diversify the interests of students by introducing them
to a wide range of books in their reading levels.
Students also learn how to use a bibliography,
and how to use the call numbers and authors' names to locate materials
in the library.
Students receive a Reading Railroad booklet
where they can record the books they have read and receive train stamps
from their teacher for completing a category.
The Reading Railroad categories include:
- Fantasy
- Biography
- History
- Reptiles, Amphibians, and Underwater Life
- Science Facts
- Poetry
- Prehistoric Times
- Astronomy
- Animal Friends
- Adventure
- Our Earth
- Plants and Birds
- Mystery
- Animal Facts
- All About You
- Mammals, Insects, and Spiders
- Family and Friends
Please ask to see your child's Reading Railroad booklet
during this semester-long project. Parents, teachers, and the library
can all help to get children "steamed up" about reading!
