Introduction
Welcome to my Kindergarten classes website. I teach two classes - the morning and the afternoon classes. This is an exciting and fun age to teach. I arrive at school each day as excited to be there as my students.
Our Theme - Bear Necessities
I love bears and most children this age do also. They are comforting as well as allowing our nurturing side to come out. Each class has a bear, Corduroy, to love and share.
Structure of the Day
We open our day with a discussion of what day of the week it is, how many days we have been in school, and the weather, which we chart. Sharing time starts then.
We cover a letter of the alphabet each week, brainstorming words, practicing printing the big and small letter, making a journal of a picture that starts with the letter and writing words that begin with the letter. Whole language is emphasized and the students who are ready will pick up on letter sounds, reading and spelling. Some will be reading by the end of kindergarten and some will still be in the pre-reading phase.
We make a lot of class books where each student contributes a page. We even make a book for the Super Kid each week to show how we appreciate each other.
We use math tubs extensively at the beginning of the year and add to our hands on exploration with Silver, Burdett & Ginn math workbooks. The math tubs allow measurement comparisons, patterning, sorting, counting, and lots of fun.
Science is not a separate section of our class. It is covered when we discuss weather, seasons, animals, plants, etc. The science center is an activity that the whole class contributes to.
Field trips are taken at the end of the year. We go to the Y in the Spring and to the Children's Farm Festival at Peden Farm in May.
