Reading

Many parents have asked for a book list to keep their children reading over the summer. We have listed a few authors below. The best way to select a book would be to go to the public library and look at the books that would appeal to your child. At the Monroe County Public Library, the librarians can show you the I Can Read or Easy Reader section.

Else Minarek

Arnold Lobel

Sid Hoff

Let's Read and Find Out! Series

Book Fun

Take a few minutes to ask questions before, during and after reading. Make sure to ask "open-ended" questions that require more than a yes or no answer such as...

  1. What do you think this story will be about?
  2. What do you think will happen next?
  3. Which is your favorite character? Why?
  4. What would you do if this were happening to you?
Have fun and use your imagination! After reading a story, have your child choose a fun way to share the story. There are many ways to retell a story...acting, writing a poem or song, retelling using puppets, drawing a picture or using magazine cutouts to make a collage.
