Creating 3-D objects out of a slab of clay and painting it .

Grade 3 - Pencils Holders
Students were to create a pencil holder using the slab method. a pattern was used to cut the shape out. Students decorated the pieces after looking at Oaxacan art work. |

Fish - Grade 4
Students were to create a wide-mouth fish using a combination of slab and construction method in clay. They learn to build the fish from a slab. Then using slip (a clay and water mixture like glue) and scoring technique they add fins, eyes, and other decorations. After the lay is fired in the kiln, students paint the fish. They looked at samples of Oaxacan art before they designed their own fish.
Chimes - Grade 5
Students were to create wind chimes using a slab of clay. After firing, the pieces were painted with tempera paint and tied together with twine.
Coil Pots - Grade 6
Students were to create a container with a lid using the slab and coil method of construction. Work was completed in one lesson. Painting of the ceramic pieces was done during a second class meeting.
