These fish are done with a combination of slab and construction method in clay. Students learn to build the fish from a slab, then add fins, eyes, and other decorations using a scoring technique and slip (a clay and water mixture like glue). After the clay is fired in the kiln, students paint the fish. We looked at samples of Oaxacan art before we designed our own fish.
