Childs Elementary School - Various Grades on Display
Each year, students in all grades do a still life. The grade level determines the emphasis of the lesson. Shapes, space and placement are important parts of the picture. Texture, proportion, dimensionality, and color are other aspects of the drawing that need attention. Each year students improve. the still life changes from year to year. Skills increase at each grade level.
Grades 1-3 begin by understanding the use of shapes, size, placement, and proportion. Each year the still life pictures improve and start to become dimensional. After the students are comfortable with drawing and coloring, painting and advanced color is introduced.
Grade 4 added color with watercolor. Emphasis was on technique and color mixing.
Grade 5 paint with tempera. Technique and mixing of colors especially tints, shades, and intermediate colors. Students also are attempting to indicate different textural qualities.
Grade 6 apply color with colored pencils. Overlap of color, color mixing, textures, shading and highlighting are the points of attention at this level.
