Story Quilts

Childs Elementary School - Grade 1

After reading Alejandro's Gift, the first graders in Mrs. Stewart's class made this quilt. The story is about a man who lives alone in the desert. He plants a garden to fill his time and realizes that the water in his gardern attracts new friends from the desert. His gift to the animals was water, and in return they give him their friendship.

This activity introduces the art of story quilts. The students too great pride in creating their panels to reflect all the animals in the story. The class also discussed the importance of giving and receiving gifts.

This unit was lead by Shana Prats, Visual Arts Education Major at Indiana University.
